Nurse practitioner Amy Pierre explains how the patient and healthcare provider relationship is a stepping stone to closing gaps in outcomes and access to care for Black patients living with multiple myeloma (MM). Learn about her mission to improve care for Black communities and what you can do to make a change.
Amy: When a patient is working with a healthcare provider who understands them, understands the disease and understands the challenges of the disease including disparities. That's a real beautiful relationship right?
Amy: When you've established a rapport with the patient, you've established trust with the patient and so there the patient feels more comfortable to share their fears, their concerns, their questions, and be more honest.
Amy: My name is Amy Pierre. I am a nurse practitioner by training. I specialize in multiple myeloma, and I've been seeing myeloma patients for almost 15 years now. As I continue to work more in this space, I realize that there are huge gaps in outcomes access to care that a lot of people, patients, healthcare providers, myeloma specialists weren't even really aware of. I think That’s My Word® is really bridging in that gap and allowing the door to be open to have these crucial conversations …
Amy: …And having that frank conversation between healthcare providers and patients and people in the community influencers so that we can really spread more awareness about this disease. My MM Promise is to continue to support and advocate for myeloma patients and continue to improve outcomes and access to care for Black myeloma patients.
